Two New Courses Set for Next Year Two new courses were recently approved by the Board of Education and have been listed in the Program of studies for the next school year. These courses are Music Theory proposed by Craig Bryan, and Human Anatomy and Physiology proposed by Jayne Ricciardi. The descriptions of these courses follow. HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - (Grades 11 and 12) – 5 credits Prerequisites: Successful completion of Biology and teacher recommendation. This elective course is designed to be an introduction to the structure and function of the human body. It provides students with a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology, including many of the real-world applications such as human diseases and an emphasis on how various organ systems work together to maintain balance in the human body. Because this course builds on many biological concepts, it is required that students have taken Biology. This course is designed to meet five periods per week with laboratory activities being incorporated into the regular class schedule. MUSIC THEORY – (Grade 9, 10, 11, 12) – 5 credits This course combines music theory, sight-singing , ear-training, and music history. Technology can be easily applied and aid instruction once the department has the required equipment. The main focus of the course will be major scales and all of the chords and intervals based upon them. Additionally, students will develop aural skills through both singing and melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation. Click here to see the entire Program of studies for 2008 - 09. |
