Lady Destroyers win home opener!

(4/4/06) The Lady Destroyers won their first home game on Monday, defeating Woodbridge VT 16-1. On a cold and rainy early April day, Dunellen put together a 7 run 2nd inning that opened the game up for good and helped move the Lady Destroyers to a 2-0 record. Led by Cassie Shotwell's 15 strikeouts, Dunellen cruised to the victory in 5 innings. Shotwell pitched her 2nd consecutive 1-hitter, and also had 2 hits at the plate and scored 3 times. Sara Locke had a long double and scored 3 times as well. The lone Woodbridge VT run was unearned. Shotwell has yet to allow an earned run in 2 games. The conference win puts Dunellen at 2-0 overall and in the conference. On Wednesday, they travel to East Brunswick VT where they will try for 3 in a row!

Lady Destroyers win on opening day!

(4/3/06) The Lady Destroyers kicked off the season on Saturday, 4/1 with a nice win over conference rival South Amboy on the road. The final score was 3-1. Senior pitcher Cassie Shotwell pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Junior 1st baseman Josie Denny had 2 hits and a key RBI in the 5th inning to lead the Destroyers. Senior shortstop Sara Locke had an RBI single in the 3rd to give Dunellen a 1-0 lead. After Denny beat out an infield hit in the 5th to make it 2-0, sophomore catcher Megan Kreyling took off for home when she noticed South Amboy's 1st baseman was arguing with the umpire and not paying attention to her. This great, heads-up base running by Kreyling helped Dunellen to a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning. With Shotwell crusing along, the 6th inning finally brought some trouble for the Destroyers. 3 errors led to an unearned run for South Amboy and despite losing her no-hitter, Shotwell got out of the jam to keep the lead at 3-1. She finished off the 7th retiring the final 3 batters in a row, and Dunellen had completed the victory, 3-1 to open the season with a win and make their record 1-0. Sophomore leftfielder Kelly Calamia had the only extra base hit of the game (a double deep to left field) and she was on base all 4 times. Freshman Liz Miller played outstanding defense at second base and Sophomore centerfielder Michelle Pakenham came up big with a catch to end the 6th. The story of the game, though, was Shotwell, who dominated South Amboy. It was a great win to start the season. Great pitching, good defense, and timely hitting. The Destroyers have their home opener today, 4/3 @ Faber School @ 4pm against Woodbridge VT.
