School News and Updates

Congratulations to the DHS Students of the Month for May:
Grade 12: Lilyana Cruz
Grade 11: Kyle Denges
Grade 10: Michael Ferrer
Grade 9: Cileo Martinez Quispe

Congratulations to Senior Mateo Morales who received the DHS Outstanding Student award from the Middlesex County Secondary Principals Association. Well deserved for a young man that does so much for DHS on a daily basis and has demonstrated such success in the classroom.

We held an inspirational assembly this week with a presentation from Gabe Hurley, a young man who was injured in a car accident due to a distracted driver. Despite being left blinded and severely injured from the accident, he has persevered with his recovery and speaks to students about having a positive attitude and never giving up.

DHS held our Spring Pep Rally, celebrating the athletes on the Baseball, Softball, Boys Tennis, and Track & Field teams. Thank you to all of the students that participated in the competitive events in the Pep Rally: Red Light/Green Light, Water Balloon Toss, Baton Relay Race, and the Tug of War!

Congratulations to all of the students that were recognized at the Honor Roll Assembly. About 130 students earned this award for the 3rd quarter. Their hard work and dedication is appreciated and will support their success in high school - and beyond.

The annual Dunellies Award show will be held on Friday, May 9th at 7 pm in the DHS Auditorium. It’s a little bit award show, a little bit talent show, giving our students another opportunity to perform on the stage in front of their peers and a live audience.

Important Reminders

REMINDER: The DHS Homework Help Center runs from 2:45 - 3:45 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the DHS Tech Center. Students can come to get extra help from teachers with their school work or just sit and have a quiet place to get things done. We encourage students to attend so that they have fewer or no assignments to do when they get home.

All students: A reminder about our ongoing Breakfast program available in the DHS Cafeteria each morning. The breakfast program is a great way to ensure students start the day with a nutritious meal. Students enrolled in the 2024-2025 free/reduced lunch program continue to receive breakfast at no cost.

Last call for the Class of 2025: DHS has a Senior Practicum program, open to 12th grade students for the last 4 weeks of the school year, where they have a chance to do an internship at a local business or organization that may help them learn more about a potential career. Instead of attending school each day, the students work under the supervision of the adults at their site for 5 hours per day. Any interested 12th grader should speak to Ms. Piano for more information.

For the Class of 2025: The College Acceptances bulletin board is up at DHS. We will display the names of students and the colleges that they have been accepted to. As the college acceptances start to roll in, please be sure to contact Ms. Markert and the Counseling Office so that they are aware and can add the names and schools for display.

Academic Corner

In recognition of their awards, we want to thank Ms. DelRosario and Mrs. Leibowitz for all they do at DHS.

Ms. DelRosario teaches PE, Health, and our Parenting class. She has seen many students come through the Little Destroyers preschool program as little ones, then teach them as students, and then, once they are parents, bring their kids into the preschool program to learn. She has provided an amazing experience for all of her students and is beloved by all.

Mrs. Leibowitz, as the Student Assistance Counselor meets with students when they are going through troubling times and need a place to ‘get away’ or just talk. She provides a safe environment for the students and works to support their needs. Mrs. Leibowitz also runs Project Connect, looking to help students that have arrived to our country adjust to all that is new and feel a sense of community and connection that a small town like Dunellen provides.
